Dark Studios is a small engineering studio. Every product starts from the same question: what's the smallest, most honest piece of software that solves this, with nothing extra riding along.
How it builds software
Privacy by default. A Dark Studios product doesn't hold onto more than it needs to. Some run entirely on hardware you control — a Docker container on a Raspberry Pi, a NAS, a home server — so your data never leaves your own machine. Others are hosted, but built the same way: nothing is stored beyond what's needed to serve the request in front of you, and nothing lingers after. Either way, there's no cloud account quietly warehousing your data behind the scenes.
No accounts, no subscriptions. If a product needs a login at all, it's kept to the minimum required to make the product work — never sold, never mined for anything else. There's no subscription to lapse, because there's no ongoing business relationship required to keep using the software.
Built for the screen you're actually on. A tool that only lives on one device isn't finished — the goal is the same experience everywhere it makes sense to be.
The flagship example
Chorey is the studio's first shipped product: a self-hosted chore tracker for a household, with a web dashboard and native iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS apps. It's the proof of the approach above, not an exception to it. See the project →
